Edgar Allan Poe
Born in Boston on January 19, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was the
second oldest out of three children. He
had a brother named William Henry and a sister named Rosalie. When Poe was at the age of two his mother died
on December 8, 1811. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan. William Henry
was taken in by their grandparents, and Rosalie was cared for by foster
parents. As Poe got older he was taught in private academics and did extremely
well in Latin. When Poe was old enough to go to college John Allan would only
help pay for half of the cost. Soon Poe started gambling to help pay for the
tuition but instead ended up in a whole lot of debt. When he returned home he
found out that is fiancée had found a new guy and was engaged to be married. After
finding out this devastating news Poe was, as you can imagine heart broken. When
Poe was 27 years old he married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm. When Poe said “We loved with a love that was
more than love” you can see that they were happily married. Virginia died in the
year of 1847. Poe died on October 7, 1849.
In the year of 1846 Poe wrote one of his most famous poems The Raven. Teachers still have their student read this poem today
and it will continue to be read in classrooms all over for many years to come.
