Nothing is known of Venerable Bede's family, but at the age of seven he was entrusted to Benedict Biscop. Bede moved to the monastery at Jarrow, were he lived the rest of his life. His scholarship covered a range of subjects like music, poetry and commentaries on the bible. By the time Bede died at the monastery in May 735 AD he had written around 40 books.

Great depression entertainment

Entertainment, people can’t live without it.  No matter if you are young, old or some were in-between, entertainment is always a round us. During the Great Depression the same was then is it is now. They may not have had all the different ways to get entertainment as we do now but it was everywhere. During the 1930’s they had movies, radios, dances as their main source of entertainment. The first radio came out in 1927 but did not become popular until 1930.  One of the songs that was popular during the time was “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.” When you listen to the song or read the lyrics you see just how much it described that time in history. People that had moved to California just wanted to have a small piece of land to raise their kids on. When they arrived, they did not get the welcome party they may have wanted.

“Now the cars of the guests began to arrive, small farmers and their families, migrants from other camps.” When word got around that there was going to be a dance no matter how big or small everyone from everywhere showed up. It was a way for people to forget about their troubles even if it was only for a few hours. “Ma and Rose of Sharron sat on a bench and watched. And as each boy asked Rose of Sharron as partner, Ma said, ‘No she ain’t well.” Even when people weren’t able to dance the music and being around people that were having fun made life just a little bit easier for them.

Poe and Romanticism


Poe is and will forever be one of the greatest writers of all time. When Poe wrote he incorporated the world around him and also what he was feeling at the time.  During the Romanticism time period people liked incorporating nature and how it related to human emotion. Poe being the writer that he was took this idea to a whole new level and didn't really care what people thought about it. He wrote what he felt and though at the time in his life.

When reading "The Fall of the House of Usher" Poe uses many  of these characteristics. One of the most obvious places in the story were Poe but all of these emotions is when he is talking about putting Madeline in the tomb alive "..He sprang furiously to his feet , and shrieked out his syllables, as if in effort he were giving up his soul - "Madman! I tell you that she now stands without the door!"." As Poe is saying this you can imagine the look of bewilderment and horror on Roderick  face. Roderick realizes that they have put his sister in the tomb alive and she has been in there for seven days. This shows Romanticism in the supernatural fact because no normal human being that is on their death bed can survive seven days with out food or water and then break out of the coffin. Another way Romanticism is show in the story is earlier on when Poe is describing the painting on the wall. there are two meanings behind it. the first is the obvious a dark and lonely tunnel that is not lit but some how had rays of light coming from somewhere. The other, deeper meaning is that this picture was a perfect description of Roderick's mind and how he has been locked away in it for years. He has not left his home in many years and just sits and talks to himself. As you read this story you realize just how said and lonely every one is and how Roderick does not want to be the last one of his family on the earth.

Overall Poe has some of the best writings from this time period. The fact that he was not afraid to write about what he was think or feeling is what i think makes him on f the greatest writers.

Edgar Allan Poe

Born in Boston on January 19, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was the second oldest out of three children.  He had a brother named William Henry and a sister named Rosalie.  When Poe was at the age of two his mother died on December 8, 1811. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan. William Henry was taken in by their grandparents, and Rosalie was cared for by foster parents. As Poe got older he was taught in private academics and did extremely well in Latin. When Poe was old enough to go to college John Allan would only help pay for half of the cost. Soon Poe started gambling to help pay for the tuition but instead ended up in a whole lot of debt. When he returned home he found out that is fiancée had found a new guy and was engaged to be married. After finding out this devastating news Poe was, as you can imagine heart broken. When Poe was 27 years old he married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia Clemm.  When Poe said “We loved with a love that was more than love” you can see that they were happily married. Virginia died in the year of 1847.  Poe died on October 7, 1849. In the year of 1846 Poe wrote one of his most famous poems The Raven. Teachers still have their student read this poem today and it will continue to be read in classrooms all over for many years to come.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Albemarle County, Virginia.he started school at the young are of nine. When he turned sixteen he enrolled in The College of William and Marry. Once there he studded mathematics, metaphysics, and philosophy. Jefferson was a very dedicated student. On average he would study fifteen hours a day. While he was still at school he learned how to play the violin and became intrigued by the arts. Once he graduated he went to practice law with George Wythe in the Virginia Bar.

Thomas Jefferson had many jobs during his life time. He most know for being the third president of the United States of America. He is also known for being vice-president under president John Adams. There are many jobs that Jefferson had he was a teacher, philosopher, historian, public official, and a plantation owner. 

Jefferson was the third oldest of eight children. he married his wife Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson on January 1,1772. Thomas and Martha had six children, but only to mad it past early childhood. The two that lived were Martha (called Patsy) and Maria (called Polly). In September, 1782 Martha past a way leaving Jefferson and two little girls.

One of Jefferson's quotes is " Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom." When Thomas Jefferson said this he was saying the only way to know what is real and true in life, you have to be true to yourself and others around you. He is also saying that you can't cut yourself short, if you want people to believe in you then you have to believe in you first. Jefferson is one of the most laid back president we have ever had and because of that people responded to him, and because people responded that makes him on of the greats leaders we have had.

The Changes in Reverend Hale

Though out the play there are many different types of people. There are some people that realize what they are doing is wrong, and people that now something is wrong but don't now what to do to fix it. Hale is one of the people that has changed to most though out the play. when he arrives he is this get the job done kind of guy. As the play progresses he changes to the type of person that has changed.

In act  four Hale shows up after being gone for three months. He said that he came back to try to get the accused to confess. he want the all to confess to save themselves from being hanged. When Danforth asks him why he has returned he says in a sarcastic voice "why,it is all simple. I come to do the Devils work. I come to counsel Christians they should belie themselves...There is blood on my head! Can you not see the blood on my head!!". He knows what he did early was wrong and he is trying to fix it the only why he know how, by coning back and talking to as many people as he can to get them to confess.

Reverend Hale

Reverend Hale is a minister from Beverly, a neighboring town to Salem. When he arrives in Salem he is there to see if Betty and the other girls are affected by witchcraft. Parris asks Hale why the devil would strike his house. "What victory would the Devil have to win a soul already bad? It is the best the Devil wants, and who better than the Minister?" When he says this he is already sure that Betty has been affected by the so called "witches" he is just looking for proof of it.

As the story continues Hale realizes that all the girls are all faking it and are convicting innocent people. At the end of act three Hale yells out "I denounce these proceedings, I quite this court!" As this act comes to a close you see that Hale has gone and done a complete hundred and eighty degree turn and changed for the better.
